One of Leo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s interns who happens to be a sophomore in high school asked how Jimmy would recommend convincing schools to accept Wikipedia as a trusted source (at 53:02 of the recording). Jimmy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s advice:<\/p>\n \n

”Be careful how you use Wikipedia. It really isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t a trusted source. It really is edited real-time and it could be full of mistakes. That really isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t the right role for an encyclopedia in the educational process. I think it basically should be fine in schools, it should be acceptable, to add a footnote saying I did a lot of my preliminary research in Wikipedia just to acknowledge where you got a lot of knowledge. But in terms of citing specific facts, you really should go to the sources and look it up there. Because that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re supposed to be doing. The encyclopedia is supposed to give you the broad overview not be a primary research tool.”<\/p>\n \n

This is exactly the advice I give when asked. Perhaps having the quote right from the horse\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s mouth will be useful.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

I en av kommentarerna till blogginl\u00c3\u00a4gget p\u00c3\u00a5 technosavvy.org ges \u00c3\u00a4ven exempel p\u00c3\u00a5 n\u00c3\u00a4r elever uppt\u00c3\u00a4cker en tvivelaktig faktauppgift, kollar upp den i en annan k\u00c3\u00a4lla och \u00c3\u00a5terv\u00c3\u00a4nder till wikipedia bara f\u00c3\u00b6r att uppt\u00c3\u00a4cka att uppgiften redan korrigerats. Det \u00c3\u00a4r ur min synvinkel en oerh\u00c3\u00b6rt l\u00c3\u00a4rorik h\u00c3\u00a4ndelsekedja som man som l\u00c3\u00a4rare f\u00c3\u00a5r skatta sig v\u00c3\u00a4ldigt lycklig att uppleva i en skarp undervisningssituation eftersom det understryker vikten av att kontrollera k\u00c3\u00a4llor, och dessutom v\u00c3\u00a4ldigt tydligt p\u00c3\u00a5visar den dynamiska naturen hos wiki’s.
